The Production
A tale of love and destruction - where protection becomes destiny, and courage rises from the ruins of a crumbling world.
Director's NoteWhen I began shaping Paasbaan, I wanted to tell a story that placed women at the heart of their own narrative - not as symbols of tragedy or devotion, but as forces of strength, resilience, and transformation.

At its core, Paasbaan is not just a tale of kingdoms and revenge. It is about protection, of family, of love, of hope, and the weight that comes with it. It explores the bond between sisters, the kind of love that endures even when the world around them is collapsing. It is also about the families we choose, the people who shelter us when bloodlines fail, who teach us to fight, to survive and to live.

Through Zeenat, Zohra, Hira, and Chand, I wanted to bring to life a world where women are not just witnesses to history, but the makers of it. Their choices, their pain, and their courage define the world they inhabit - and the one they leave behind.

This production has been years in the making, and it stands as a celebration of the extraordinary talent of our community. Over a hundred artists, dancers, and creatives are coming together to tell a story that is both timeless and deeply human.

Paasbaan means “protector.” It is a word that carries both strength and tenderness. This story is a tribute to all who protect - not just with their swords, but with their hearts.

Music and Dance
Anarkali the Musical Dancing Photo
A team of over twenty exceptional musicians and vocalists, led by Sydney- based composer Abhijit Dan, breathes life into the soul of Rajasthan through a rich and evocative soundscape. Rooted in traditional bandishes, folk melodies, and classical forms, the music of Paasbaan captures both the earthy spirit of Rajasthan and the refinement of Mughal artistry from the late 1600s.

While the heart of the score beats to the vibrant pulse of Rajasthani tradition, subtle Mughal influences weave through the poetry, rhythm, and movement, creating a tapestry that is both regal and raw. From the spiritual devotion of the Durga Pooja and the fiery energy of the Tandav, to the grace of the Mujra and the precision of classical compositions, every note carries the emotion and depth of the story.

At its core, Paasbaan celebrates Kathak, the classical dance form that drives the narrative forward. A cast of over sixty dancers brings this vision to life through breathtaking choreography that blends classical technique with the warmth and vibrancy of Indian folk traditions.

Together, the music and dance of Paasbaan create an immersive experience - a celebration of heritage, rhythm, and storytelling that transcends time, echoing both the grandeur of royal courts and the heartbeat of the desert.

Costumes, Sets and Jewellery

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Rajasthan, Paasbaan captures the splendour of a bygone era through its opulent costumes, intricate sets, and exquisite jewellery. While the story unfolds amidst the deserts and palaces of Rajasthan, subtle Mughal influences run through the designs, creating a unique fusion of royal elegance and earthy authenticity.

Over 400 handcrafted costumes and more than 1,000 pieces of ornate jewellery and adornments bring to life the contrasting worlds of courtesans, warriors, and royalty. Each garment - from the rich lehengas and angrakhas of Rajasthan to the delicate anarkalis and sherwanis inspired by Mughal courts - has been meticulously researched and designed to reflect both historical accuracy and modern sensibility.

The sets transport audiences into grand palaces, bustling kothas, and sun- drenched courtyards, with every detail - from the lanterns and thrones to the vibrant drapes and hand-painted backdrops - contributing to the immersive experience.

Together, the costumes, sets, and jewellery of Paasbaan recreate a world of splendour, power, and passion, where every thread, colour, and ornament tells a story of its own.
